Registration may close on 16 November 2026, 14 days from today
TimeOut Racing quotes an ASO newsletter giving 16 Nov as the post-relocation deadline, with extra time for payments and paperwork unverified. Confirm your entry status today with ASO at concurrents@dakar.com.
The rally has left Saudi Arabia
On 30 October ASO moved the 49th Dakar to Portugal and Morocco, 9–23 January 2027, subject to FIA approval. The Dakar Classic follows. Scrutineering moves from Barcelona to the Algarve Stadium (6–8 Jan; service park opens 5 Jan). Saudi Arabia returns for the 50th edition in 2028.
You are co-driving the reigning champion
Karolis Raišys won the 2026 Dakar Classic with Christophe Marques on 735 points, with six stage wins, in a 1978 Land Rover 109 Series III. In 2025 he was third with Ignas Daunoravičius. Lithuanian media call the car a "Defender senolis" (old Defender); it is the Series III 109.
The group question: H1 may no longer be open to the 109
Karolis won 2025 and 2026 in H1 (the slowest averages). The 2027 V1 rules open H1 only to cars on ASO's "Low Performance" list, and Appendix 1 lists the Land Rover 109 (1980) as H2/H3/H4. If that stands, you race H2 averages. Get this answered by ASO before the entry is final.
The rules were rewritten for 2027 and will change again
The 2027 Sporting Regulations V1 (2 June 2026) were written for a Saudi route. Expect a revised version and bulletins after the relocation: new programme, time zone and stage list. The penalty mechanics below are the best baseline available. Re-check every number on Sportity (V1 password DK27CLASSIC).

Terrain to expect
- High-plateau hamada and reg around Bouarfa, cold nights in January.
- Oueds and palm-grove villages (speed zones) through the Drâa valley and Zagora.
- Ergs near Merzouga and the south: Dune Tests and possible chicken-way decisions.
- Western Sahara around Smara and the Atlantic coast: fast pistes, fesh-fesh, coastal humidity.
- Rain and mud are possible in the Atlas and the Oriental in January general knowledge.
Logistics that changed
- No Barcelona shipping. The Algarve is about 4,000 km by road from Vilnius (estimate).
- Ferry from southern Spain to Nador after Stage 1. The port, booking and whether the fee covers it are not published yet.
- Return from Marrakech, probably by ferry from Tanger Med unverified.
- Official time will no longer be UTC+3. Portugal is UTC+0; check which base the Tripy uses.
- Monte-Carlo Historique starts 27 Jan, under four days after the finish. Karolis is weighing both (tv3.lt).
How the Classic works vs. the Car class
"Speed shall have no impact whatsoever on the classification." Each stage is a chain of tests linked by transfers with allocated times, and every mistake converts into points. Lowest total wins.
| Topic | Dakar Car (your 2025) | Dakar Classic |
|---|---|---|
| Result | Fastest cumulative time | Fewest penalty points (art. 3.1) |
| Tests | Special stages + liaisons | Regularity (RT), Super Regularity (SRT), Navigation (NT), Dune (DT), plus TCs and transfers |
| Navigation device | Organiser e-roadbook tablet | Tripy (GPS, digital roadbook and official timing) + Iritrack. The paper roadbook is official; Tripy information is an aid (art. 5.5) |
| Your instruments | Organiser-defined | Up to two devices of your choice: tripmaster, regularity computer, GPS (art. 4.6) |
| Speed | As fast as safe, within DZs | Hold the imposed average for your group. Over +15 % on a whole RT = 5,000 points |
| Waypoints | WPV / WPM / WPE / WPC | PCI (secret time checks), CP, and in NT/DT: WPA / WPB / WPS / WPT and every box |
| Protests | Possible | 2026: none. 2027 V1 brings them back (€1,000) with appeals (€3,000) |
| Licence | International cross-country | National licence for a regularity event with foreign participation + ASN (LASF) authorisation (2026 art. 4.1) |
| Race numbers | 200s etc. | 700–899 cars, 900–999 trucks |
RT · Regularity Test
10–200 km of open track with averages that change every few hundred metres (multiples of 5 km/h; 2024 tables ran 20–85 km/h). Secret PCIs time you to the second. The Tripy is in assisted mode: track arrow, distance to the next box, and a yellow compass if you are more than 100 m off route.
SRT · Super Regularity Test
Scored like an RT, but the Tripy is in manual mode with no track and no countdown. It shows a crow-flies arrow only within 100 m of the next note (300 m for danger 2–3 in 2027). Stages 5 and 6 of 2026 were SRT days, including a 547 km selective.
NT · Navigation Test
2027: every roadbook box is a waypoint (20 points each if missed). The aim is to match the organiser's reference distance: 5 points per 100 m away from it, over or under. There are maximum times at each WPT, and the top 10 earn bonus points (−15 down to −1). A Secret NT hands out its roadbook only at the TC before it.
DT · Dune Test
Every box is a compulsory waypoint with a 90 m radius. The Tripy shows only an arrow. Exempt vehicles take the "chicken way" in the yellow pages at the back of the roadbook. Missed box 20 points, late 5 per minute, skipped start 300.
The day, as a co-driver lives it
- Evening before. At TC4 (bivouac entry) you get the next day's average-speed table and timetable, also on Sportity at 17:00. Briefing at 19:30, start list around 20:00. Load the table into your regularity computer and mark every average change, DZ row (20 km/h for all groups) and danger.
- TC1, bivouac exit. Roadbook and timecard are handed out. Groups leave in the order H4, H3, H2, H2t, H1, H1t, each in the previous stage's order without TC penalties. More than 5 minutes late at TC1 is penalised and the bonus does not apply.
- Liaison A. Read the roadbook against your tables.
- RT start. The first RT start time comes from the marshal. Later ones are self-started on :00 or :30, at least 3 minutes after the TCv (2027), with no repairs, pressures or fuel (parc fermé).
- After each F.RT. Copy the Tripy time (HH:MM, seconds dropped) into the grey boxes, add the allocated time, and that is your next check-in minute. Never write in the pink marshal boxes.

Scoring and penalties 2027 V1
Regularity: how a PCI scores
The ideal time at any point is the sum of each segment's length divided by its average, using the average printed on the box where the segment starts. Tested against ASO's published 2024 RT 1.1 table, this formula reproduces every value to the second. At a secret PCI your elapsed time is compared with that ideal.
| Item | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 | 2027 V1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Early or late at a PCI, per second | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Cap per PCI | 60 | 60 | 30 | 30 |
| Missed PCI (more than 90 m away) | 100 | 100 | 50 | 50 |
| Maximum per RT | — | — | 450 | 450 / 900 if >200 km |
| More than 10 min late at any PCI or F.RT | — | — | — | RT maximum |
| Skipped RT start | rule | rule | 500 | 500 / 1,000 |
| Overall RT average more than 15 % too fast | 5,000 | 5,000 | 5,000 | 5,000 → 10,000 → DSQ |
| Joker / bonus | worst PCI cancelled | 15 min TC credit | 15 min TC credit | 15 min TC credit |
| Power Stage (RT 13.1 in V1) | — | — | doubled bulletin | 2 pts/s, cap 60 |
Where PCIs cannot be
The regulation keeps PCIs away from places where crews must slow down, so a co-driver knows in advance which stretches are "safe" to recover time in. In 2027 a PCI is always on a single, visible track, at least 1 km after the start and at least 1 km after a CP, with a 90 m validation radius.
Also excluded: off-piste (HP), 300 m before a NEU IN to 1 km after a NEU OUT, and wherever the roadbook prints "NO PCI". Source: 2027 V1 art. 5.8.3, 5.7.1.
Everything else that costs points (cars, 2027 V1)
| Infringement | Points |
|---|---|
| TC or virtual TC early or late, per minute or part-minute | 10 |
| Missed TC / TCv | 500 |
| Missed CP (passage control, may be secret) | 50 |
| DZ/FZ overspeed 3–15 / 16–40 / over 40 km/h | 50 / 100 / 300 |
| Each repeat DZ overspeed | +1,000 up to DSQ |
| Missed DZ/FZ or off route inside the zone | 300 |
| RT max speed 140 km/h exceeded by 3–15 / 16–40 / over 40 | 50 / 100 / 300 |
| Auto-start procedure breach | 100 |
| NT: missed waypoint / per 100 m off the reference distance | 20 / 5 |
| NT: late per minute at a WPT or F.NT (max 50 each) | 5 |
| DT: missed box / late per minute / skipped start | 20 / 5 / 300 |
| Missed NEU IN or NEU OUT; early at NEU OUT per second | 300; 5 |
| Stage not completed (cap) | 5,000 |
| Stage not started | 6,000 |
| Tripy / Iritrack tampering | 5,000 → DSQ |
| Liaison speeding 3–20 km/h over (1st) | 100 + €100 |
More than one hour late at any control and the Race Director may declare you out for that stage: every remaining control counts as missed, capped at 5,000 points. The winner's whole-rally total was 586–820 points from 2024 to 2026, so any roadside repair has to fit inside that hour.
Time-card maths you must do in your head
F.RT → next TC
F.RT at 14:30:58, 20 minutes allocated → check in at 14:50. Drop the seconds (truncate, don't round), add the allocated time. You are on time anywhere from 14:50:00 to 14:50:59.
TC penalty
Target 10:15, you check in at 10:17:20: that is minute 17, two minutes late, 20 points. The 15-minute stage bonus can absorb late TCs, but not TC1 or the TCv after a Dune Test.
Auto-start
Start on :00 or :30, never at the same moment as another crew, keep arrival order with at most 1 minute between crews, and leave at least 3 minutes after the TCv (2027). At the virtual red sign the car must be moving.
Calibration error = points
At 50 km/h one second is 13.9 m. A 1 % calibration error over 20 km is 200 m, about 14 seconds, so 14 points at the next PCI. Sync at every clean box.
Equipment: the Tripy and your two devices
- Tripy-K is GPS, digital roadbook and official timer. Its record prevails over the timecard. It shows the current average (white), next average (orange), group, speed and km. ASO's own training says it is "not a regularity timer": it never tells you whether you are early or late.
- It alerts 300 m before a DZ, beeps on danger 2 and 3, and shows a red OVERSPEED inside a zone. It must be wired straight to the battery and not mounted on top of the cage.
- You may add at most two measuring devices of any type. In practice: a tripmaster plus a regularity computer that shows ahead/behind. The 2022 front-runners reportedly used French-made units with the route preloaded unverified.
- Authentic Co-driver Challenge: only a tripmaster with no average-speed function, a stopwatch, the organiser's average table and the roadbook. A separate trophy; 14 navigators entered in 2026. Enrol at admin checks.
- There is a calibration zone before the Private Test. Use all the Private Test runs (unlimited in 2026–27) to choose your group and settle the crew's rhythm.

Groups and eligibility H1–H4
The organiser opens each route at an H2 average in a standard, unprepared 4×4. The other groups are set relative to that base. In tricky sectors the difference between groups can drop to 0 %.
| Group | Average vs H2 | 2026 access | 2027 V1 access | Land Rover 109 (2027 Appendix 1) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H1 low | −10 % minimum | Period A only (Karolis ran H1.A) | Low Performance list only | NO |
| H2 moderate | Base | Periods A, B | Low Performance list + Period A | YES |
| H3 intermediate | +5 % minimum | All periods | Periods A, B | YES |
| H4 high | +10 % minimum | Periods B, C | Periods A, B | YES |
The 2027 Periods follow the model's first Dakar appearance: A ("Pre-95") up to 1994, B ("Post-95") from 1995 to Dakar 2005, and no Period C. The 109 first raced the Dakar in 1979, so it is Period A. If ASO keeps it off the Low Performance list, you will race the H2 base averages, which are faster than the H1 you won on. Ask ASO for the final Appendix 1 and the Low Performance list, and practise at H2 averages in the simulator.
Group choice is made after the Private Test. The last change is at the Stewards after the Prologue, and a crew that changes then starts Stage 1 last in its new group. In 2025 several crews dropped from H2 to H1 after day one.

Patterns worth knowing
- Toyota HDJ80s won four in a row (2022–2025). In 2026 the best one was 6th. Regularity rewards precision within your group, not pace: the oldest car in the field won.
- Margins are tiny at the top. 2024 was decided by 12 points and 2025 by 31. Each second at a PCI is a point.
- One failure undoes a rally. Juan Morera was 2nd in 2026 until an alternator belt failed on Stage 10, then took a 5,000-point penalty and retired.
- Trucks are getting competitive. In 2026 Tomasz Białkowski's DAF "Bull" (Jan de Rooy's 1985 truck) became the first truck to win a Classic stage outright, and finished 9th.
- Side challenges: 27 cars in the Iconic Classic Club (period chassis that actually raced the Dakar) and 14 in the Authentic Co-driver Challenge in 2026.

Karolis Raišys
- Lithuanian, born 1982. Former Lithuanian rally champion and Monte-Carlo Historique class winner, heading for his 10th Monte start.
- Dakar Classic: 3rd overall and H1.A winner in 2025 with Ignas Daunoravičius; outright winner in 2026 with Christophe Marques.
- Ran 2026 with no service truck. For 2027 he plans mechanics, but the agreed support team will not travel on the new dates.

The car
- 1978 Land Rover 109 Station Wagon (Series III), styled after the standard 109 the Calamel brothers drove in the 1979 Paris–Dakar. One source lists it as "LR 109 Stage One V8" unverified.
- Built in about a month at the Vilnius Automuziejus workshop for 2025.
- 2026 changes: redesigned engine and gearbox mounts, relocated oil filter, Honda NSX radiator, Ferrari F40 Competizione pads.
- Known weak points: leaf springs (broken on 2026 Stage 9 and trouble again on the last day), mounts, throttle cable, spring bushes.
- Faults, roadside fixes, spares and daily checks: Land Rover 109 Field Guide.
Karolis hired Marques in 2026 because he is a regularity specialist (ex-Bruno Saby navigator, 2023 Tour de Corse Historique winner). On the test day the new crew needed four laps of a 26 km loop to find a rhythm: the co-driver could not dictate fast enough at first, so they "learned to drive slower to drive fast". Plan for the same settling-in, and use every Private Test run.

Lessons and rookie mistakes from the field
What wins
- Finish every stage. An unfinished stage costs up to 5,000 and a non-start 6,000, more than a winner's whole rally.
- Consistency beats brilliance. Karolis won six stages but also had a 12th and a 20th; avoiding blow-ups won it.
- Pick the right group, and settle the H1 question for 2027 now.
- Build crew rhythm early in the Private Test. "Excessive tension inevitably leads to mistakes."
- "Surgical" order in the car. Every tool and spare in a fixed place; "disorder can cost you the finish".
- Plan the marathon nights. Only Classic crews and officials may help each other at a marathon bivouac. The 2027 route has a refuge night.
- Master the paperwork. Timecard, TCv, auto-start minutes: free points rookies give away.
- Train navigation without electronics for SRT and Secret NT days.
What costs rookies
- Wrong direction or off-route: Karolis's Stage 12 in 2026. In an NT, driving 1 km less than the reference turns it into a skipped NT (500).
- Running over +15 % on an RT's overall average: 5,000 in one go.
- Trusting the Tripy display over the paper roadbook and the average table.
- Forgetting the green Iritrack button when stopping to help someone, so there is no time credit.
- Arriving more than 5 minutes late at TC1, where the bonus does not apply.
- Not knowing the rules before arriving: "every day we were learning something new".
- Under-preparing the car: the 2025 mounts broke over a dune.
- Fuel: the minimum range is 350 km + 10 %.

- The Classic's own 2027 stage list, km, refuge use and how Secret Navigation will work on the new route.
- Final Classic dates: 9–22 or 9–23 January.
- Whether the €18,700 fee and its inclusions change after the relocation.

- Whether an RT's timing starts at your chosen :00/:30 slot or when the Tripy records you crossing the line (probably the slot).
- Which regularity computers the top Classic crews use.
- The issuing federation and licence type for 2027 (Portugal's FPAK or Morocco's FRMSM).
